Here is my Top 8 Deck from the 1/4/20 Chicago Prime.

I will put the analysis of the deck and each round below if you would like to see what went into the creation of the deck.

First i want to thank my local team for all the practice games we played the prior week leading up to the prime. Also i worked with an amazing group of players in Madison Wisconsin who I played with for the last 5 months and helped me tweak the deck.

Second this deck normally runs with a one die chirpa and a preemptive strike plot. I found in testing that this deck performed better with two dice on chirpa. It helped me avoid a roll out of chirpa to forsaken as well as it helped with by adding another dice at the beginning of the round that could be focused to Chirpa special for an additional in direct damage.

One of the reasons this deck was chosen was because I wanted to have a counter to Palp which i felt was going to be a big part of the meta till Covert Missions is released. For this prime, it was definitely true.

Round 1: Palp/Watto (W) This round was fairly quick. I did not get a target acquired but was able to use the squad tactics into two chirpa specials, two finish off with a strength in numbers. I was able to close the game out at the beginning of round 3 without too much trouble.

Round 2: Palp/Watto - Darek (L) This round should have been mine but i made 2 key errors. The opponent went on to finish swiss out undefeated and also won the whole prime. I played this player last chicago prime and was very nervous to face him given that i made miss plays last time i faced him with another deck. He kept assuring me that i would win, but i was still very nervous. On round two i made a misplay to try and hasty exit his watto 2 disrupt. He told me that i could not due that and then told me rules dictated i discard my card and miss my turn. This ended up turning the game as he disrupted me and i ended up losing that whole turn. Then in round three i miss played a blaze of glory forgetting i had already activated my hoth trooper and ended up losing that turn as well. He was able to batca twice which put him out of range. Ended up losing that round.

Round 3: Reylo (W) Do not remember this round honestly very much. I remember it was not close but we did play 4 rounds and i did lose everyone but chirpa.

Round 4: ObiWan / R2 (L) This round is with a team mate from Michigan. I had played against this deck before and knew i had less than a 50% chance of winning if i did not get a target acquired. I did not get one even with a 6 card mulligan. This game was close as i lost with his R2 only having 1 health and his ObiWan with 3 health. I misplayed by discarding a target acquired round 3 thinking that i had R2 dead. Good close game with a friend.

Round 5: Maul/Phasma2 (W) This game was pretty close. Did not get a target acquired again for 4 rounds. This lady was very nice and she played at the last Chicago prime i was at playing a similar pairing. She ended up with both of her riot shields round one and was able to avoid 6 damage out of 15 that i dealt. Once phasma was removed just had to control maul. The game came down to being able to dual laser trip wire and then rig detonation maul for the kill.

Round 6: Kit Fisto/Luke2 (W) This game went my way from the start. Was able to target acquire Luke on round 2 which took him off the board at start of round 3. Opponent was light on any aggro cards and the only big hit he got was an Strike on my Hoth Trooper round two to kill him off. He was able to shield but because his mitigation was in Kit Fistos dice, he was not able to block any of the burn cards. I ended up finishing him off round 4 before he got upset and threw my target acquired at me in a fit of rage.

Round 7: Maul/Mando (W) This game was close as his Maul rolled hot every round. Was able to remove Mando round 2 which helped stop the power action plus removed some weapons i did not want to see. He was able to come back with his Maul but an easy pickings two rounds in a row helped me avoid enough damage to get out my specials and a rigged detention to finish the game. Great match up and glad to have played this player.

I ended up 5-2 with a lost to the undefeated palp player and to Isaac the Obi/R2 player who was also 5-2. Ended up with an eight place finish and moved into top cut.

Top Cut was against the number one seat, Darek who was on Palp Watto. This was going to be a rematch from Round 2. We joked about my mistakes from round 2 and he congratulated me in making it to top cut.

Round 1 (L) This one was pretty close. Darek had played against ewoks enough that he was able to mulligan hard for dangerous maneuvers and a force wave. I did not get a target acquired again and was not able to go after palp. Watto was down at the beginning of round 2 taking his ramp off line, but the Force Wave was too much. I had his palp down to one health when he batca. By next round he had batca again and put the game too far out of reach. This was honestly the longest round of Ewoks i had ever played coming in at 45 minutes.

Round 2 (W) I was able to choose his battlefield for this one to keep him off shields. He again was able to keep damage off palp all round one but lost watto again early round two. He only was able to pull one upgrade which was a palp saber which once i had a laser trip wire down did not do any good. This caused his palp to be down to 3 health at the end of round two and he scoped the game opting for more time in the third round.

Round 3 (L) This game took me out of the finals. Looking back on this round, i played very tight. I was not able to draw any burn cards till round three and was not able to get damage out fast enough to stop his ramp. He was able to avoid rigged detonation for more than 3 damage and he slow played this whole round. We traded many turns where that ended in him taking shields over damage and me not being able to put enough damage on the table. I did get a convergence off round two to remove his force wave which threw him off but the force storm hit the table at the end of the round to make up for it. This game was 40 minutes long and i was down to the last 6 cards in my deck when he finally was able to over whelm me with his palp. Very good player and he had definitely played against other ewok decks enough to be better than the average player.

Side note later i learned that he had built a plowoks deck for his friend who also made top cut which makes more sense know why he was able to counter most of what i was throwing at him. Still a very talented player and i was happy that most of my losses came from him as it gives me a chance to learn as i continue to grow as a player.

@Tantastic19 -- congratulations on your Top 8 finish! I'm your opponent from Round 5, the Maul2/Phasma2 player. That was a great, close game! I like Maul into Ewoks b/c Maul's PA and Fear and Dead Men can mow down the little murder bears pretty effectively. As you pointed out, it helped that you never saw your Target Acquired...haha!...but there's only so much indirect damage a two-character, low health list can soak up! Nicely done!

It's difficult to remember the details of all the games at a long tournament, but if I remember correctly, your last play was actually double Truce into Rigged Detonation. I don't recall seeing the Laser Tripwire. Still, a clever, awesome finish to a really fun game!!

P.S. Two of my opponents that day were Maul Mando, both losses for me. I have now played Red Maul and Yellow Maul at major tourneys, and I think Yellow is the better deck. :D swdestinydb.com

@Telcontar I believe the laser tripwires were before i played the truces into a rigged detonation. I could be wrong thought as it was a long day. I do remember the rigged detonation. Was fun playing you. My son remember sitting next to you with his maul watto from the first prime we played at together. I agree though the yellow maul version is better and more aggressive. Was fun playing you and looking forward to next chicago prime.

Good work on the Top8. I was wondering why you picked Truce over Kinship or Well-Connected? I know that Kinship has the spot requirement and Well-Connected has the draw for the opponent (and they lack ambush), but I feel like I'd rather that than give my opponent a free .

Would be interested in your reasoning. Cheers

@rogue6548 Thanks.

During play testing the main reason to use truce over the other two was because it gave me ambush which allowed me to us the resource without it being disrupted. One of the big challenges this deck faces is resources and players were mitigating my dice with resources as well as disrupting me when they could. Especially on a palp/watto build.

Kinship I can only spot the 5 Ewoks and it has to be at the beginning of the game. And since they usually went after Ewoks first I would lose the ability to use it later in the game. As for well connected I would play that card in a different meta honestly. If I didn’t have to play palp and reylo all the time I would have played that one. But giving palp a card was like giving palp a health and reylo a new toy.

With truce I was able to get an extra damage from rigged detonation or on round one when my opponent saw I burned both resources and was not worried I would be able to use it to play a mitigation card Olin my hand that took their dice off the table. Also it would help round one if I had only one resource but exhausted all my characters and wanted to play a strength in numbers. That play with a squad tactics and a target acquired would end a game round two almost every time because it was a 12 damage turn one plus whatever chirpa rolled. If those are the only cards I could net 18 damage round one or if I got lucky and had a glider attack I could net 20 or 21 damage.
