This is the first time I am posting up one of my decks on SWDestinyDB but I have really enjoyed working on and playing this deck, so I've wanted to share it. I've named it Momma's Boy because Kylo will do whatever Mother tells him to do :)

I am going to post the current matches it has been pitted against before I go into how I play this deck. This is a mix of TTS, local play and, recently, a local 3-box tourney (17 players, in which it got 2nd).

Vs. R2P2 - 2-0

Vs. P2A1 - 3-0

Vs. Old 5 Dice - 2-0

Vs. New 5 Dice - 1-0

Vs. Reiken Hero Mill - 3-0

Vs. OTK Sister - 1-0

Vs. Zeb/Yoda - 2-0

Vs. Tarkin/Seventh - 3-0

Vs. Obi/Maz - 2-0

Vs. Yoda/eAayla/TempleGuard - 1-0

Vs. Boba/Phasma 0-2

Overall: 20-2

Build

Crystal Ball and Dark Counsel have sometimes been the only upgrades I've played, and I have still been able to win a match. As you can see, all the cards in this deck are odd, you never really need to check your own deck with Crystal Ball's ability but getting this out early creates the opportunity to control your opponent's die. Additionally, similar to Dark Counsel, it is a resource and focus generating machine.

Heirloom Lightsaber is a great 3 cost redeploy upgrade. Throw this on whoever is taking the harder hits (usually Kylo) and once it redeploys, override for something more useful for that character (i.e. Force Push on Mother). Maul's Lightsaber and Kylo Ren's Lightsaber are still a big question mark for me... If I get It Binds All Things out early, these cards are devastating. But if not, they kind of bloat the deck. More often than not, they bloat. Again, I've won games with literally only a Crystal Ball on Mother. Both Kylo and Mother's die are great for damage, especially with Kylo's ability to do potential damage and Mother's ability to correct bad rolls.

Overconfidence and High Ground are your typical control cards... Feel Your Anger is too but can do wonders against Tarkin/Seventh. It has brought me victory in really tough situations. Indomitable and Witch Magick will keep you alive when you are on your last character. 1 resource for 3 health or 3 shields? Yes, please. Spell of Removal is a guaranteed removal by discarding from your deck. Or, if you used Crystal Ball to view an odd card in your opponent's deck, then discard that Handcrafted Light Bow AND remove a die. Good times.

Now the oh, so sweet finishers. All In with focus sides from Crystal Ball and Dark Counsel have been great character killers. That's just the way All In works.

Unyielding is another beast altogether. It is the main reason I haven't played Aurra Sing - Deadly Shot/Mother Talzin - Nightsister Matriarch, lack of Blue damage dealing dice. 1 resource and you can resolve any number of your Blue damage dice as unblockable. It is like a built-in All In that gives your dice that Vibroknife touch. There have been endless situations where an opponent will opt out of re-rolling for damage and shield up instead; then throw on a Force Illusion next turn. After thinking they're all safe, they'll usually claim. That's when you play your Unyielding and go Emo Anakin on their Padawans. That harmless 4 damage that wouldn't eat through shields and your illusion? Oh wait, it just did... Fair warning, if you were borderline darkside, this will through you straight over the cliff...

Playing the Deck

So this is where I admit I lied. P2A1's score should actually be 3-1. The reason I didn't include it is because it was the first beta test-run of this deck. I had no idea how to pilot it and I actually ended up losing to mill. MILL FROM P2A1. Nope, not counting it.

The biggest mistake I made in my first play is thinking that this deck needs to get out upgrades ASAP, like most other decks. I completely underestimated Kylo and Mother's abilities and dice, they can wreck on their own. I spent resources on weapons, and discarded hard for "big damage". Incorrect. This deck thrives on mitigation to the point of tip-toeing on oppressive. Your first plays each round should not be spending resources for upgrades/supports. You save those for mitigation and protecting yourself. After your opponent's big plays are over, then you can resolve dice for resources and build up your arsenal. BUT YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE CLEAR. I cannot stress this enough. Resources are for mitigation FIRST, upgrades will come out mid-game. The only exception is to use one to play a Crystal Ball or Dark Counsel, which helps reduce cost later on in the game.

If you take your battlefield, try to get to claim early. You need to build resources early on, while your opponent is still trying to build an effective arsenal. If you have a great play left in you, don't worry about trying to claim early.

Aside from those tips, you decide on how you want to use Mother. If you have Crystal Ball on her, she could be great dice manipulation for defense. If not, I almost always correct my dice into damage. I find that because damage is such a guarantee, most people will burn through their mitigation cards early, leaving mid to late game wide open for blow-out finishers.

You typically want to see some type of mitigation in your opening hand and a 1 cost upgrade (preferably Crystal Ball). Tossing back the 3-cost upgrades is a good call. The mitigation really depends on what you're facing. I would hold Feel Your Anger for things like Tarkin/Seventh, but I would throw it back for something like Overconfidence if I was going against P2A1.

When Momma Cries

So what's been my biggest struggle so far? Hard, stupid fast damage output. Like... crazy, stupid, fast. The only losses I have had was facing a Boba/Phasma deck with tricks like Quick Draw into Ambush and Take Flight into god rolls. The first time I faced it, I thought I didn't have enough experience playing around that particular deck. I spoke with the deckmaster and she gave me some great advice on how to beat her deck. We faced off again in the finals of a 3-box. Instead of bursting down Phasma early game, I bursted down Boba. Still... Phasma can hit like a beast and Mother so desperately tries to mitigate dice but a majority of Boba/Phasma cards are usually 0 or 2 cost cards. It makes Momma sad. Still haven't found a way to beat this deck so I am open to suggestions on switching up cards or strategy!

Anyway, I have had a great time playing this deck and I hope you will as well! If I switch anything, it will honestly be all the sabers except Heirloom Lightsaber. They just never really have made or broken any games. They get discarded for re-rolls more than anything. If I do switch those out, then this deck officially has NO LEGENDARIES, which is actually pretty cool :)

Update:

  • -2 Kylo Ren's Lightsaber
  • -2 It Binds All Things
  • -1 Maul's Lightsaber
  • -1 Moisture Farm

  • +2 Force Throw
  • +2 Nightsister Coven
  • +1 Snare
  • +1 Outer Rim Outpost

tested it only twice, haven't seen too much of a difference except I really love Outer Rim Outpost more than Moisture Farm. Let's me dig for healing a lot easier.

Very interesting. I'm definitely going to try this out.

Carraminana 90

thought adding Insidious?? Nice deck m8!!!

eric212 1

So why Kylo instead of Maul?

Destry210 732

No Rise Again? I would replace Snare and Indomitable with them. I would also replace the 2 Dark Counsel with 2 Sith Holocron and the 2 Force Push with 2 Force Lighting. I would also put 2 Mind Probe in it and remove 1 Force Throw and the other Indomitable. I know that Force Lightning is a legendary but it is cheaper now to get as a single. I would replace Spell of Removal with Isolation because with Spell of Removal, you have to discard a card which could be an important card.

StaticCat 40

@maximusthose cards that you mentioned are all even coated if he put them in his deck then Mother Talzin - Nightsister Matriarch wouldn’t work 100% of the time and neither would Witch Magick that’s why those cards you suggested would be terrible for this deck. Personally I love this deck and the idea behind it. Very cool I might have to try it with my own tweaks and let you know how it went.

LordArtex 27

I love the concept here, great deck! I think I'd sneak in a Rise Again instead of the All In. I find that I rarely use that card as I'm either trying to claim the battlefield and have few dice out at one time, or it's after my opponent has claimed and there is little use for it.

Danik13 545

20-2 ... Hum? I call your bluff ! No way this deck went 20-2.

Gravos 1

I dont particularly like High Ground in this meta, there are many decks that abuse the chain of specials so its hard to claim the battlefield in some situations so I prefer to use "Isolation", for the same reason I prefer to use Maul's lightsaber over "Force push" and include "Force wave" for vehicles and rainbow decks. Thanks for posting the deck.

GenghisDon 100

Question about Indomitable. Even if you have a dead character, don't you technically still have more than 1 character? I would think you would have to consider the dead character as still available else cards like Endless Ranks would do nothing.

earnan21 1

Do you think Deflect might help against Boba/Phasma2 and other potential ranged decks? (My wife is obsessed with Sabine/Ezra for example.)

I'm not sure about High Ground as well - your write up seems to indicate you aren't likely to claim. I like what it's going for, but I'm not sure how often you'll be able to use it (without testing it myself to see if it ends up claiming more often than I think.)

RedRightHand 1

Tried this last night against Yoda/Poe and was soundly defeated, but I do feel like there is something here.

kosoluk 1

No holocrons? Why?

Epro 572

I like this deck a lot. Been toying with Mother myself and Kylo2 is already a power player. Mislead could be strong as removal for you. Also, where's Lightsaber Throw??

StaticCat 40

`@kosoluk because it’s 0 cost and messes his chance of 100% with Mother Talzin - Nightsister Matriarch and cards that work off the odd number

TA317 368

Whoa, didn't expect this much feedback lol I'll try to get to everyone's questions... @Carraminana Hadn't thought about that... I'm not sure what I would exchange for it but I'll look into it, definitely would help with resources!

`@eric212` It's the same reason I chose Kylo over Baby Vader, +1 health and Kylo's ability. I usually take the time to review typical "meta" decks and try to memorize the portions of cards that are a typical color. And I usually never activate Kylo without requesting to look at an opponent's discard pile, especially if they discarded heavily the previous round. It really takes out the element of randomness from "guessing" the right color.

`@maximus` I have the entirety of the previous 3 sets, but the main reason I didn't put in is the lack of security in [Witch Magick](/card/05082), [Spell of Removal](/card/05081) and Mother's ability. Pretty much what `@StaticCat` said...

`@LordArtex` I have tried [Rise Again](/card/02076) and I never quite had enough money to save up for it. I also never 100% needed it. However, I do agree with you about [All In](/card/01152), it has come in handy sometimes but not enough to make it a staple

`@Danik13` No worries, I can see how people doubt the score but you have to remember 1) we're in a new meta, it might not stay this strong for long and 2) people are still figuring out their decks and how they play, it could just be ahead of the game because of all the guaranteed plays (removal, healing, and guaranteed focus each turn)

`@Gravos``@earnan21` I do think [Deflect](/card/01145) would help, and I've played around with the idea. My current meta is more focused on melee at the moment though, so I haven't seen a need to play it. As for [High Ground](/card/02128), you'll be claiming early in the match, because there isn't much you will be doing except auto-focusing into damage and controlling. So I like to use it as early control and, if I draw it mid-game, I will sacrifice plays to make sure I have the battlefield. It's worked a few times with doing that one extra damage.

`@GenghisDon` No, it doesn't refer to the amount of characters you started with in the beginning. It is referencing the amount of characters you have now. So once one of your Blues go down, you can stick 3 shields on your last man standing.

`@Oph1d1an` I haven't gone up against Poda yet, although I hear that is gaining some traction. I would like to try a few matches against it! What helps against meta decks like that is memorizing their card builds. Most of the time they will gear towards blue removal and weapons (minus Poe's Blaster), and focus red's on things like Honor Guard and Field Medic. Red usually only makes up 25% of things like Aayla/Poe, R2P2, and, assuming, the new Poda. Was it just Poda bursting you down or the deck struggled overall?

`@Epro` [Mislead](/card/05130) is interesting... I'll have to see what I can shift around to try that out... And I originally had [Lightsaber Throw](/card/02072) in here but then opted in for more defensive cards.

`@kosoluk` Exactly what `@StaticCat` said. The first brainstorm of this deck had holocrons and a few even cost upgrades, but it hurts bad to pay 1 for Witch Magick and only heal 1...

Thanks for the feedback! I hope you're enjoying all the new legacies stuff coming out!

EliteWampa 1

Would you consider adding Chance Cube as your only even numbered cards? With Talzin's ability you can focus them for 3R's and it's usefull as this deck is very expensive.

darthryan 17

@TA317 I ended up running something like this in the Portland Regionals this weekend and ended up 5-3. Not too shabby. Thanks for the inspirtion! The decks I had issues with were high shield teams and Yoda/Hondo. But on my last match I came across one more, and I just didn’t spend any resources, except for Hondos specials and pulled through. Thanks again!

earnan21 1

Played this at a local tourney this weekend and went 5-1, with the loss being for sure winnable if I hadn't made some errors (and if Kylo2 had ever hit, talked to the guy after the round and it was 50/50 shots every time and I just kept missing.) Like it a lot!

I know I suck at overwriting upgrades, and I was never got 1-costs in the first 2 rounds, but I'm wondering about the 3 cost upgrades. Heirloom Lightsaber never hit the table for me. Considering Temptation (I like cards that add to decision fatigue for the opponent.)

I'm also seriously considering Force Rend in place of Force Push. The damage sides are clearly better on Push, but Rend to get rid of Holocron/Speed/Illusion/C-3P0/new R2-D2 seems like it's playable? Or am I crazy?

Also looking at Frighten in general - when I play Intimidate in other decks I always want to be able to resolve dice, so the Ambush is a help and it's 1-cost so it fits.

LordArtex 27

@TA317I played this deck casually the other day and man did it do some good work. Nightsister Coven was way more useful that I thought it would be. Witch Magick pulled enough healing on Mother to keep me in it to win 3 games, two against aggro and one against a Thrawn mill deck. Lost to the Emperor though. lol I did wonder about switching out the Heirloom Lightsaber for the Crossguard Lightsaber. I think you have a great deck here!

TA317 368

Hey everyone!

`@EliteWampa` I haven't thought of it... If I draw into resource heavy cards, I'll use Mother's ability to focus my dice into resources. If I roll a lot of resources one round, I usually will just resolve them all instead of re-rolling for damage. It is a very expensive deck to run so resource management is a huge factor. Don't worry about playing control on incremental damage.

`@darthryan` That's awesome! I caught some of the live stream and saw 1 or 2 Kylo/Talzin, I am happy to see it making rounds! I've played Poe/Hondo before I made this deck and that's exactly what opponents would do to me. They would just play one or two good upgrades and then just horde resources and Hondo was useless. So I gave up on him. I might have to revisit it again though!

`@earnan21`I mainly threw [Heirloom Lightsaber](/card/05058) in there for the Redeploy value, hoping to save some resources for future upgrades but you are correct. In further testing I have rarely been able to play Heirloom. I was thinking of subbing them for some heavy hitting events like [It Will All Be Mine](/card/03073). I have considered [Temptation](/card/03014) but haven't tried it yet. I also thought about [Force Rend](/card/05007) but, suprisingly, haven't pulled any lol It might take the place of Heirloom though! [Frighten](/card/05078) is one I definitely want to include, haven't figured out where yet...

`@LordArtex` Yes! I have fallen in love with [Nightsister Coven](/card/05083), it stresses the opponent out when they roll out or when they choose to reroll. It's such a troll card hahaa. [Witch Magick](/card/05082) has brought me back from the brink of death many times, I wouldn't switch it out for anything. I haven't played against the Emperor but that would be an interesting match... When he rolls well he hits hard. I haven't thought about adding in any even cost cards. When I'm asked why it's usually because I love guarantees. I would hate that one dice roll comes down to using Mother's ability, only to reveal the unlucky 6% chance of hitting an even card. Or using [Spell of Removal](/card/05081) or [Witch Magick](/card/05082) and missing the odd card.
